Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Glen Cove public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
2026 Road, Drainage and Sidewalk Improvements
With the bonds and a $717,772 drainage contract approved, work on chronic flooding streets — Woolsey, Chestnut, Poplar, Pine, Beatrice — plus road and sidewalk fixes can now move forward before the rainy season.
Hotel occupancy tax uncertainty
The budget counts on a hotel occupancy tax that hasn't been approved yet — the mayor pushed its assumed start from April to August after council feedback. One resident questioned whether a 4% add-on could hurt Glen Cove's only hotel.
Roadway, Drainage and Sidewalk Improvements
The $717,772 drainage contract for flood-prone streets (Woolsey, Chestnut, Poplar, Pine, Beatrice and Barbara Lanes, New Woods Road) got tabled because the money depends on the failed bond. Flooding fixes wait.
Chemical Bulk Storage Spill Prevention Plan
A Midwick Place resident delivered a passionate plea about four Superfund sites along Seacliff Avenue, citing groundwater contamination down to 130 feet and health worries, and said he's gotten no answers from the city or state for 15 years.
Federal and State Police Grants
Nearly $1.2 million in grants fund a total dispatch center overhaul, patrol vehicles, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, radios, and thermal/night-vision gear to help find lost children with autism. A new Tahoe and NEOGOV software contracts were also approved.
Water Service Interruption and Road Closure
Glen Cove is shutting off water and closing roads starting at 9 AM Tuesday, October 6, so your morning routine may need a backup plan. Expect temporary service disruptions and detours in the affected area.
